Mobile 5G is a topic that is making the rounds in the telco and IT media circles. Business leaders too are talking about it. It is highly anticipated and has much hype surrounding it.
But will it live up to expectations?
I believe 2019 is the year that mobile 5G will garner wide spread attention. However, 2019 will not be the year we will see wide spread implementation.
Yes, there will be advancements in augmented reality applications. And yes, there will be significant progress in 5G based services. But they will more than likely hit the market in 2020. 2019 is the year of preparation and hype. 2020 is the year the rubber meets the road.
At present, mobile 5G is not ready. Businesses and consumers have little reason to upgrade. Carriers and manufacturers are unlikely to offer much more than what is already available through 4G.
I believe the hype surrounding mobile 5G is credible and justified. And I think that it will have a profound impact on the telco industry in 2020, and beyond.
